Megaliths
The word megalith translates from ancient Greek mega meaning great and lithos meaning stone. The term was first used in by Algernon Herbert, who used the term to describe Stonehenge, which we will discuss in this episode. Most of these structures were constructed during the Neolithic period although there are structures dated back to the earlier Mesolithic period and continue through the Mesolithic period, the chalcolithic period and the Bronze age. Some of these structures did function as tombs or above ground burial chambers but not all of them served this purpose. A dolman is a megalithic tomb consisting of a single chamber, structured by two or more megaliths with serve to support a large flat horizontal capstone, or table.
