The Bell Witch

This is a legend that has been passed from generation to generation for 200 years! The year was 1804 when John Bell moved his family from his home state of North Carolina where he apprenticed as a barrel maker, to
Red River Tennessee where he became a farmer.  The move came from the influence of many friends and a few years of failed crops.  John Bell, His wife Lucy and sons Jesse, John Jr., Esther, Drewry and Benjamin made the treacherous journey westward, where their farming endeavors proved to be much more successful. John Bell purchased a large house for his family, as well as some land, the span of which increased to 328 acres which were cleared as fields for planting.  Here, he was also an elder of Red River Baptist Church.  The Bells had three more children after moving to Tennessee:  Elizabeth (Betsy), Richard and then Joel. Their lives in the west could be described as successful, but in 1817 things took a strange turn for the Bell family.
